My teaching reflects the interdisciplinary nature of my scholarship. At the University of Houston, I regularly teach one graduate course (Media and Politics) that enrolls political science and communication Ph.D. and M.A. students, and three undergraduate courses across the two fields (Media Effects; Media, Power and Society; and Politics and Mass Media). I have also taught Special Problems and Independent Study courses and supervised student research through a Provost-funded program at UH. At the University of Richmond, I taught courses focused on the social sciences within the interdisciplinary Jepson School of Leadership Studies.
Critical thinking and rigorous, logical analysis are fundamental to my teaching, and all of my students produce original research in my classes. Further, being at UH has provided opportunities to reflect on what I can bring to the classroom as a faculty member who, like 43% of our students, was a first-generation undergraduate and graduate student. I often draw on my own experiences as I work to make my classroom a place where all students can thrive. My student evaluations reflect these efforts and are consistently well above my departments’ averages.
